The Labcom.IFP, from the University of Beira Interior, Portugal, will promote in the next 26 and 27 October at the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, the International Conference Pathologies and Dysfunctions of Democracy in Media Context.
The purpose of this conference is to bring together researchers from Communication Sciences and related areas (Political Science, Political Theory, Political Philosophy, Political Sociology and others), with particular emphasis on those interested in political communication around a unifying common axis: pathologies and dysfunctions of democracy, in media contexts, in different aspects of its involvement with the media, such as: the media representation of these pathologies and dysfunctions; the contribution or, on the other hand, the damage of the media to the functioning of democratic institutions; the interference of political agents in journalistic information; the relationship between media and political institutions in the processes of building public opinion, etc.
The International conference focus on three themes that will be addressed in three plenary panels and three sets of parallel sessions:
- Communication and silences: concealment, alternative facts and "false news" - evaluation of visibility / invisibility phenomena, silencing and concealment in political decision-making processes and decisions.
- The challenges of political participation in the "post-truth" era - such as political participation and deliberation occur in the face of the proliferation of strategically manipulated information.
- Pathologies and dysfunctions of democracy: scandal, corruption and negative campaign - Analyze the impact of phenomena generally designated as pathological, dysfunctional and deviant in the democratic process, as well as its representation in the media.
I will be chairing one of the parallel sessions.
